Newborn & Infant Photo Session

Photo Sessions:

"I can honestly say that having the photos taken was the best bonding experience I have had with my daughter. I will treasure the images for my lifetime and then pass them on to my daughter. I strongly recommend the experience to all mothers. Amy truly has a gift for taking beautiful photographs." - Jill Sprecher

What to Expect

I’ll begin shooting once we “warm up” to each other.  Often, I’ll notice beautiful light in the bedroom and suggest getting comfortable in that room to take advantage of the light.  From there, we will move in front of the studio lights for additional images.  Sometimes, the baby or babies will provide cues on how the photo session progresses.  I will move around the lighting gear and will use a short stepping stool all the while orchestrating the photo session by suggesting where to place hands and have the head turn toward or away from the camera.  When working with a partner, I’ll photograph relationship and connection as displayed through closeness, touch and eye contact with each other.   Relaxation and comfortability provide the access to connection and for that reason - every effort is taken to ensure the comfort level of the entire family.

The photo session will include images of the baby’s hands/feet generally taken using ambient light from a window or doorway.  These images are best created when the baby is sleeping or during a feeding.   Additional images will include baby or babies being held by mom and/or dad or other family members.  Typically, I use angles of the upper portion of the body to create the imagery.

My photography of new families utilizes no props and limited clothing.  Newborns and infants are often held by either the mother or the father using the flesh tones of the skin as a backdrop for the image.  Some woman prefer that particular portions of the body not be included in the work.  I have a variety of fabrics that can make body parts seen, yet not seen and we can discuss incorporating these fabrics

When Including An Older Sibling

Please take time before the session to prepare the child about being photographed.  Have the child’s favorite play items, snack and drink available at the session.  The child may want to be included in the images at the beginning of the session and may want to participate in the latter portion of the session.  Either way, we will capture images and continue to encourage the child’s participation as we proceed through the photo session.

Helpful tips:

  • Please wear loose clothing the day of shoot as elastic fabric will leave an impression on the skin.
  • Consider polishing nails or leaving nails entirely unpolished for the photo session.
  • Have available a variety of blouses, tank tops or scarves to experiment with colors and textures in the fabrics.  A purple or red color will be a dark gray and even black on the final image and a yellow or light blue will be a light gray color. Some skin tones work better with dark colors while others are complimented by lighter colored fabrics.
  • I encourage minimal make up, minimal jewelry and natural hair.  If including jewelry, please be mindful to restore the lustere of the pieces to be included.  Long hair can be photographed up and then let down naturally for additional images.
  • The photography will be created around the newborn/infant’s feeding and sleep schedule and we will take breaks as required.
  • Babies are best photographed without a diaper and perhaps swaddled in a blanket.
  • Have towels available in preparation once the diaper is removed.  Additionally, have extra diapers available as diapes will be taken on and off throughout the session.
  • Cradle cap, stork bites and skin imperfections can be retouched with client approval.

I look forward to meeting you and creating images of this time in your life.
